The Great Backyard Bird Count: Day 1 No Luck!!

We are participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count this year! This is the first for us, and the first time we purposely are bird watchers:)

We were excited when we looked up and saw bird nest in the trees. We thought for sure we were going to see some birds in our backyard today!! After the first fifteen minutes the kids were becoming impatient.

So we decided to change the locations of the bird feeders to see if this would help.

Then we started talking about the weather. The kids went inside and brought back their weather equipment to check out what the temperature was and other things related to weather.

The second time we went outside we spotted a bird, can't tell you what kind because it flew by us so fast, and because we were talking and not observing we took notice too late:(

In the end the kids learned a great deal about how weather has a lot to do with the birds. In the photo above DJ is painting plastic spoons to use as wind cups because he was missing those. He really wanted to know more about the wind. Tomorrow we are headed out again with our voices in silence and our eyes wide open.

Time For A Walk

We have finally taken our first Fall season Nature Walk . The sun was shining, but it was still cold! We just went for a walk around the neighborhood. It still took about an hour to get back home, it was time well spent.

The next day I  found DJ trying to match the leaves to the insets from the Botany Cabinet.
