Our Weekly Wrap-Up

I am really liking posting our weekly wrap-ups. It helps me to stay positive when I think there wasn't "enough" work done. This week especially because it was a little off for me due to working late nights. I am very proud of my two independent workers staying busy with only a few lessons introduced to them.

Both kiddos finished up to chapter 5 in our reading books. Ken and I are able to have meaninful conversations about the differece between myths and facts regarding being a pre teen and also how our body develops while reading" Are You There God It's Me Margret"? by Judy Blume. By the way with Ken I think this is a great unit to introduce the Human Body as it grows through varoius stages. DJ is really fascinated with the drawings in his book The Inventions Of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.

So far in the story we have found out that Hugo's father use to repair clocks and brought home an automaton for Hugo. Hugo loves this automaton and takes toys apart to gather gears to make a model of his own. Also we know Hugo works at a train station in Paris making sure the clocks are set on the right time. Actually we learned a lot more but I can't tell you all of the story:) DJ is definetly connecting to Hugo Cabret.

Other things that they did in the language area........

Ken recorded the Latin phrases that she knows in her language notebook.

Independently reading and copying a few facts.

Geometry is still a favorite subject of Kens' she worked with the types of line three part cards and of course the Geometric Cabinet Command Cards.

DJ had fun working with Pie Graphs. This work came from Montessori For Learning. I simply just printed it and he got busy. I hope that the fun he had doing this will add an another element to his research work.
They both did work in their Life of Fred books, the picture above shows Ken getting a review in division.
Multiplication is still DJ's focus in the math dapartment.

As always the culture works played a huge role in their learning.
DJ made a phases of the moon booklet.
Ken worked a lot with learning about different butterfly eggs, types of different butterflies, and the migration of the Monarch butterfly.
DJ got on the computer to compare the different lifecycles of insects.
He is totally hooked with doing dissections.
Ken raced herself with how fast she could label the Map puzzle and finshed mapping the national state parks.

Still involved in creating hairstyles.
DJ was sawing and hammering for hours one afternoon.

The good weather brought about fun learning adventures outdoors.
Although this week was a bit busier for me in the daycare department I still can't complain. Life is good!!

  2. I love how the kids follow their interests! Your little guy is adorable taking things apart! My youngest does that too! Today he took about my vacuum cleaner and removed a clog and got it working again. (He's just 7 and can use tools better than I can! LOL) And you little girl doing her hair-dressing! Skills that they can use when they grow up!

  3. Where did you get your Montesorri Curriculums. They look great and I would like to incorporate some more of that into our homeschool. Especially for the K-3 set. It all looks so interesting and they look so absorbed!

  4. I briefly looked at a lot of the wrap ups that posted early. I was annoyed that no one left you comments as the first poster but posters after you have several comments. So I decided to send you some love so you wouldn't feel left out. Good job on what appears to be a very productive week.

  7. Looks like another great and productive week! I loved the book "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret?" It was one of my favorite books as a pre-teen. What a great idea to use it as a fun add on for health or human body studies!!

  9. Great idea for a simple fish dissection. I would have been fishing at the pond for hours without success. It would not have occurred to me to go to the pet store.

Very inspiring variety and depth of work. Keep it up guys!

  10. Wow! A LOT of learning happened in your household this week! Some great ideas here.

I agree with you about the weekly wrap-ups. Even on weeks where I feel like we didn't get enough done, when I sit down and type it out, I discover that a lot was accomplished!

  13. I love reading your wrap ups. I think I told you this before, but you inspire me to keep going with our learning!! I believe that no matter the child, the Montessori Method will eventually inspire personal driven learning. Your children model this so well and I can't wait until my children catch the bug!! Where do you get your command cards?
