Our Learning This Week

They are almost finished with their read alouds. Just a couple more short chapters and we move on to new books. The Inventions of Hugo Cabret has just been so good!! DJ and I got to have a discussion about Prometheus and stealing. This book really has great possibilities to create a unit study. You just fall in love with all of the characters. Ken and I have enjoyed Are You There God It's Me Margret. She has been learning about the different phases our bodies go through during puberty. We also talked about different eating disorders like anorexia, and bulimia.
Ken has been doing most of her language arts work doing spelling pages out of a workbook. They have been working on coloring and writing stories using the Crayola Story Studio. What I like about their work in this area is how they have actually woven this aspect into other subject areas.

Math has been a lot of fun for them this week. They have did chapters in Life of Fred while journaling and other math activities they have recorded in their journals too.

For most part they have worked with decimals and fractions. DJ worked with the Multiplication Bead Board as well as some workbook pages. Percentages are still fun to Ken and she completed some long division workbook pages.

In geography DJ has been learning about Desert habitats as well as the animals that live in the desert. He visited the Sahara, Sonoran, and the Gobi deserts via the book Can You Survive The Deserts? An Interactive Survival Adventure by Matt Doeden. He also has been learning more about the continent in Africa and had fun building a pyramid with project bricks.
                                                            Desert animal book
Reading from the Africa continent box

DJ did the pyramid on the right using the one on the left as his guide.

In the area of science. Ken has continued her study of butterflies, and DJ has blasted off with building and flying a rocket.
Planting flowers that attract butterflies. She did this on Monday still no seeds:(
                                                  Notebooking page.
                                                              Copying interesting facts about butterflies.
DJ had a lot of fun with the Rocket. By the end of play the rocket lost its' wings. It is repairable, so he still will be enjoying this project whenever the sun is out.

Practical life as always played a major role.

                                                             Trimming the bushes!!

Ken completed her dress! Very exciting!!

To see more homeschooling wrap-ups of their learning week pop over to weird, unsocialized homeschoolers and Living Montessori Now for Montessori Monday.

  3. We've read Hugo Cabret recently, too, even the three year old enjoyed the pictures. I love the way that your children are involved with practical skills.
