Daily Report:12-05-2011

We had a fantastic school day ! We begin the day a little differently instead of reading we did our exploration study. The kids had a blast making the Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Anything that involves DJ using his saw is a winner.

During Montessori work period Ken chose to work with the Bubble Magic tray figuring out how to make geometric shapes. This is a picture of her with Andrew. Ken and Andrew work really close together. I am not kidding you, she helps Andrew anyway she can, and he loves it!!

With this work Ken was able to understand the difference between perimeter and area.

Reading time was a ball, we read two chapters today and we could of read even more. The kids found out some information about C.S. Lewis and we talked about the theme of the book being about a struggle between good and evil. They recorded that in the first chapter "Lucy" struggled with this by opening the wardrobe door.

DJ spent his work period finishing up a his latest sensation. The Life of Fred Elementary Series. We got them Saturday and all day Sunday DJ worked on the book EdgeWood it has nineteen chapters that cover a wide range of topics and math concepts.
He finished his first book today!! All he is talking about is Fred this, Fred that. I have to admit when I read through it Iwas quite entertained. I can tell you right now that this couldn't work for a complete math curriculum for us, it is a good choice to have though.

No I did not photoshop this! I captured this moment while Ken was working with the Life of Fred. Kinda, eerie(lol).

I was able to sneak in a little bit of Language Arts today with this activity that I found here . Elf Hunt!

So this what you do. First you cut these little guys out.

then you hide them away in difficult places. In my case I put these guys around the house after the kids went to bed and when they woke up and finally opened their eyes, they had question about these guys when they saw one on the T.V.
I told them that during work period time they could find them and record on a sheet exactly where they find all twelve of them, and don't tell each other.

Needless to say that the first work choice was a language activity.

Practicing prepositional phrases never hurt anybody. By the way there is a recording sheet for the younger crowd that are able to recognize numbers from 1 to 12 where they just check off the number when they find it. I am totally doing this with the preschoolers too.

I think this was the highlight of their day, because when Michelle came home from school and heard how much fun this activity was she had to do it too!!

By the way I have a camera crew now and not all of the photos were taken by me. Their getting  pretty good !!
