Daily Report:12-08-2011

We continue to read more about Explorers and learned some more things about the Spanish explorers. The kids weren't too impressed with Hernan Cortes who in 1519 tried to take Mexico from the Aztecs. They ask the same question now since learning about the Native Americans Trail of Tears "Why does someone always want to take someone elses' land?".  They did enjoy doing some Aztec Math.

Life of Fred has made for some good conversation among the siblings. DJ completed chapter 4 in Farming and was introduced to negative numbers. Ken completed chapter 5 in Goldfish and had a great review in the commutative property again this term was the first time she was exposed to it.

During Montessori work time I was rather busy with the preschoolers but I was able to find these photos of the kids in action today.
                                                    Nut cracking and sewing.

Idioms, similes, and metaphors. After DJ completed this sorting activity he came to report to me that he now knows his SMILES :)
Ken came into the kitchen while I was working with the preschoolers so I was able to use the bathroom while she read them a story.

We read chapter 5 in The Lion,The Witch, And the Wardrobe. The good and evil struggle was with Edmund who once again starting teasing Lucy about the Wardrobe and the other children think Lucy has gone mad. At the end of the chapter all four of the children decide to step into the wardrobe. I thought it was cool that they both were able to realize that the chapters are ending the same way and then compared it to how in every Magic Treehouse book the first chapter always ends with the same lines. They loved learning about Logical Statements through the Professor and they also did some Narnia Logic.
Their highlight and where most of their time was spent was making paper mache. Their making Pinatas so we can have a touch of Los Posados at our Christmas celebrations party.
